Doodle Coat Types: To Curl or Not to Curl

So we all have our own reasons for wanting a specific type puppy and coat.

Doodle were originally created to bring some of the fantastic poodle traits into other breeds. One being the coat. A curly coated dog is generally thought to be less allergenic than other coat types. It also has less propensity to shed.

In the doodle world, there are 4 categories of coats and you can get any combination of the coats in any litter, though of course genetics and generations play a roll in percentages.

This is how I break down the coats:

Flat = Looks like a Retriever coat in it's length and tends to shed more. These can be beautiful dogs!

Straight = This is a long coat that needs grooming, but is very easy to care for, although they generally shed a little in little "cotton" puffs. This is my favorite look and although I am allergic to certain dogs, this coat does not affect me. This coat can go through multiple changes as a puppy and the coat may not fully grow out until they are a year old.

Wavy = This is also one of my favorites. This is a coat that grows long and needs grooming, but is easy to maintain and has minimal to no shedding. I just love the look of the longer shaggy coat.

Curly = A curly coat can be very tight or loose. The amount of the curl is not generally fully seen until the puppy is an adult. In their younger months, you can usually look at where the hair is growing out from the skin and see that the coat is getting more and more curly. In fact, it may even be at the 18 month grooming that you see the full extent of the curl. This coat is fantastic in that it usually does not shed and does not generally produce allergens. Though this coat does require more frequent grooming and is more likely to get matted. It is more difficult to keep this coat long.
